استقبل ممثلي بعثات الدول الاعضاء للاتحاد الأوروبي في الخرطوم فريق الدفاع القانوني عن السيدة مريم ابراهيم والتى صدر قرار ضدها يوم 11 مايو بحكم الردة في المحكمة الجنائية بالحاج يوسف في منطقة الخرطوم بحري . واطلع الدبلوماسيون الاوروبيون على تطورات الحالة وآثارها على التسامح الديني وحقوق الإنسان. بعد الاجتماع، صرح ممثلو بعثات دول الاتحاد الأوروبي والدول الأعضاء بانهم متابعون لتطورات هذه القضية . واكد الدبلوماسيون الاوربيون احترامهم الكامل لاستقلالية النظام القانوني السوداني.
و أشار ممثلو الاتحاد الأوروبي أن الحرية الدينية هي حق من حقوق الإنسان العالمية التي يجب أن تكون محمية في كل مكان و بالنسبة للجميع.
كما اكد الدبلوماسيون من دول الاتحاد الاوروبي أنه في سياق اتفاقيات الأمم المتحدة و الاتحاد الأفريقي ذات الصلة ، للسودان التزام دولي للدفاع عن وتعزيز حرية الاديان.
European Union calls for promotion of tolerance and protection of the freedom of religion
The representatives of the European Union Delegation and its member states in Khartoum received the legal defense team of Ms. Meryam Ibrahim, who on 11 May was found guilty of apostasy at the Al Haj Youssef Criminal Court in Khartoum North. The diplomats were briefed about the development of the case and its implications on religious tolerance and human rights.
Following the meeting, the European representatives explained that the EU and its member states have been attentively following this case. While reiterating full respect for the independence of the Sudanese legal system, the EU representatives recalled that the freedom of religion is a universal human right that needs to be protected everywhere and for everyone. The EU diplomats underlined that in the context of relevant UN and African Union conventions, Sudan has an international obligation to defend and promote the freedom of religion.
