ICC Prosecutor to hold Press Conference on the opening of the Abd-Al-Rahman trial | 5 April 2022, 17:00 CEST
The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (“ICC”), Mr Karim A. A. Khan QC, will hold a Press Conference at the ICC premises in The Hague on 5 April 2022 at 17:00 (The Hague local time) following the opening of the trial in the case of The Prosecutor v Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman (“Ali Kushayb”). Mr Abd-Al-Rahman is accused of 31 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity allegedly committed in Darfur, Sudan.
Following a brief statement, the Prosecutor would be pleased to take questions from participating journalists in connection with the case of The Prosecutor v Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman.
The Press Conference will be broadcasted live on the ICC website in English and Arabic at: http://player.cdn.tv1.eu/statics/66005/icc.html, in Arabic on the ICC Facebook account and in English on the ICC YouTube Channel. Attending the press conference: Journalists can request attendance for the Press Conference to be held in the ICC’s media centre via email to: PublicAffairs.Unit@icc-cpi.int before Tuesday, 5 April at 13:00.
All journalists must present a valid press card, and a valid passport or ID with a photo, at the main entrance of the Court (at: Oude Waalsdorperweg 10, 2597 AK The Hague). Individuals who have not received a confirmation in advance will not be granted access to the building. Measures against coronavirus, including wearing a mask and keeping a distance of 1.5 metres must be strictly observed.
Background: The Abd-Al-Rahman trial will open on 5 April 2022 before ICC Trial Chamber I. The Chamber will hear the Prosecution’s opening statement first, followed by a short unsworn statement by the accused and a short remark presented by the Legal Representatives of Victims. The Prosecution will be given six hours to present its opening statement; followed by the first witness, an expert scheduled to start on 6 April 2022. The 31 charges against the accused include intentionally directing attacks against the civilian population as such, as a war crime; murder as a crime against humanity and a war crime; pillaging as a war crime; destruction of the property of an adversary, without military necessity, as a war crime; other inhumane acts as a crime against humanity; outrages upon personal dignity as a war crime; rape as a crime against humanity and a war crime; forcible transfer as a crime against humanity; persecution as a crime against humanity; torture as a crime against humanity and a war crime; cruel treatment as a war crime; attempted murder as a crime against humanity and a war crime.
