The Third Consultative Meeting on Strengthening the Coordination of Peace Initiatives and Efforts in the Sudan concluded with the adoption of the attached final communiqué. The meeting, convened by the Islamic Republic of Mauritania as the current Chairman of the African Union Summit, brought together high-level representatives of multilateral organizations and sponsors of peace initiatives in the Sudan.
Participants stressed the urgent need to reach a ceasefire in the Sudan in pursuit of peace and stability in the country and urged the belligerent parties to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law and their obligations under a serious declaration.
Participants also renewed their resolve to strengthen coordination and intensify efforts to ensure the integration of various initiatives aimed at ending the war in the Sudan and the resumption of a inclusive political process.
For his part, the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for the Sudan, Mr. Ramtane Lamamra, said: " It is a glorious scene for hearts to continue the conflict -- not less than 20 months to date -- and its grave consequences for the people of the Sudan, especially women and children. He said: " There is a collective responsibility on us to make every effort to put an end to the tragic and prolonged suffering in the Sudan " .
The Personal Envoy of Mayor stressed that the partnership between multilateral organizations and key peace makers was indispensable, noting that " we have a remarkable history of serious successes and achievements, based on unity of purpose, comprehensive efforts and effective mediation, and I am confident that we will continue to strengthen this, ensuring the complementarity, harmony and coordination of our efforts in support of the Sudan and its people " .
