Statement on Situation in Sudan

The Statement
Global Affairs Canada today issued the following statement:
“Canada commends the people of Sudan for their determination to make their voices heard since the beginning of peaceful demonstrations in December 2018. In the face of a violent response from authorities, the people of Sudan have exhibited grace and courage.
“We call on Sudanese authorities to reverse the suspension of the constitution, lift the state of emergency and to release anyone detained in connection with the demonstrations.
“Canada is closely monitoring the situation and remains in contact with like-minded partners.
“We echo the statement of the African Union Commission that a military council goes against the principles of the African Union Charter. A transition to a civilian government is essential.
“Canada’s diplomatic and consular staff remain on the ground in Sudan to assist Canadians. While the Embassy of Canada to Sudan in Khartoum is closed due to security considerations, consular services remain available. Canadians in Sudan in need of emergency consular assistance should call the Emergency Watch and Response Centre in Ottawa at +1 613 996 8885 (collect calls are accepted where possible) or send an email to sos@international.gc.ca.
“We urge Canadians to avoid all travel to Sudan. We encourage Canadians to stay connected to the latest Travel Advice and Advisories on Travel.gc.ca and by registering with the Registration of Canadians Abroad.”
أصدرت وزارة الخارجية الكندية يوم الجمعة 12 إبريل البيان التالي حول الوضع في السودان:
“تشيد كندا بشعب السودان على تصميمه على إسماع صوته منذ بدء المظاهرات السلمية في ديسمبر 2018. وفي مواجهة رد فعلٍ عنيفٍ من السلطات، أبدى شعب السودان تسامياً وشجاعة. ندعو السلطات السودانية إلى التراجع عن تعطيل الدستور وإلى رفع حالة الطوارئ والإفراج عن أي شخصٍ محتجزٍ بسبب المظاهرات. إن كندا تراقب الوضع عن كثب وتظلُّ على اتصالٍ مع شركائها ذوي التفكير المماثل. ننضم صوتنا لبيان مفوضية الاتحاد الأفريقي بأن قيام مجلسٍ عسكري يتعارض مع مبادئ ميثاق الاتحاد الأفريقي. إن الانتقال إلى حكومةٍ مدنيةٍ أمرٌ ضروري”.
“لا يزال الموظفون الدبلوماسيون والقنصليون الكنديون على الأرض في السودان لمساعدة الكنديين. بينما تظلُّ سفارة كندا في السودان في الخرطوم مغلقة لاعتباراتٍ أمنية، لا تزال الخدمات القنصلية متوفرة. ينبغي على الكنديين في السودان الذين يحتاجون إلى مساعدةٍ قنصليةٍ طارئة الاتصال بمركز المراقبة والاستجابة للطوارئ في أوتاوا على الرقم: 1 613 996 8885 (يتم قبول المكالمات غير مسددة الثمن حيثما أمكن ذلك) أو إرسال بريد إلكتروني إلى sos@international.gc.ca.. . نحثُّ الكنديين على تجنب السفر إلى السودان. نشجع الكنديين على مواصلة تتبع أحدث توجيهات ونصائح السفر على الموقع: Travel.gc.ca وعلى التسجيل في سجل الكنديين في الخارج. “
