Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA) Call for Swift Action Against Sudan Regime

DALLAS, Texas, Feb. 25, 2019 —

WHO: Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA) sapa-usa.com

WHAT: Calling for swift action against Sudan regime

WHEN: February 25, 2019

WHY: For the ninth week in a row, Sudanese citizens have taken to the streets to peacefully protest the brutality and corruption of the dictatorial regime of Omer al-Bashir and seek freedom and justice under a new and democratically elected Sudanese government. al-Bashir has met these protests with unrestrained violence, including using live ammunition against defenseless and peaceful gatherings, breaking into homes and hospitals to assault and kill pro-democracy activists, and arresting political opponents on a massive scale.

Despite increasing international outcry, al-Bashir and the head of his security apparatus continue to threaten more bloodshed as protests continue to demand justice and an end to more than 30 years of tyrannical exploitation of the Sudanese people. Per Human Rights Watch 1, the death toll of innocent demonstrators has reached at least 51, a figure that does not include thousands more who have been assaulted or unjustly detained by the security forces.

On February 22, al-Bashir has declared a year-long national state of emergency, dismissed the federal government and sacked all state governors. Shortly after the televised speech, the announcements were met with street demonstrations and protestors who were chanting “Just fall, that’s all”, demanding al-Bashir and his regime to step down.

Two days later, hundreds of peaceful demonstrations were erupted throughout the country to defy the state of emergency. Security forces swiftly confronted protesters with tear gas and live ammunitions. Also, video footages showed masked security forces storming the premises of University of Medical Sciences and Technology and beating students with sticks and whips.

In the United States, Sudanese-American communities nationwide have been organizing protests to voice our support and solidarity with our people back home. We declare our pride in the remarkable courage, determination and sacrifice of the Sudanese protestors seeking freedom, justice, and an end to the corrupt dictatorship of Omer al-Bashir.

We appeal to our elected officials and fellow citizens in the United States of America to stand in solidarity with us and to support our efforts by calling on the Trump Administration and the United States Congress to:

Strongly condemn the al-Bashir regime’s killing of peaceful pro-democracy demonstrators and demand an international judicial investigation;
Release political prisoners immediately and unconditionally, and allow the people of Sudan their right to protest and freedom of expression;
Support liberty, justice, and peaceful transition of power.

We understand that the fate of this regime will only be decided by the will of the Sudanese people themselves, but it is time for the United States and the international community to stop legitimizing a regime that has long been delegitimized by its own people.
